COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILEd) (course-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge and practical expertise in Indigenous language teaching, learning, and revitalization through structured coursework. The program includes core courses such as ED 817, which introduces foundational concepts in Indigenous education, including cultural perspectives and pedagogical approaches. Students also complete EC&I 854, focusing on language education theories and strategies for effective instruction, and EC&I 858, which emphasizes curriculum development and instructional design in Indigenous language contexts. Additional required courses include EC&I 871AQ and EC&I 871AR, which explore advanced topics in Indigenous language pedagogy, applied linguistics, and culturally responsive teaching practices. The program also provides flexibility through five Approved 8XX electives, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests such as language revitalization, educational leadership, community-based learning, or curriculum innovation. Unlike thesis or project-based options, this course-based stream does not require independent research or a major final project. Instead, it focuses on comprehensive coursework and applied learning experiences that build professional skills and cultural understanding. Overall, the MILEd course-based program prepares graduates for careers in education, language programming, and community initiatives aimed at preserving and strengthening Indigenous languages in culturally meaningful ways.
