COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Indigenous Education (MIEd) (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge and research skills in Indigenous education through a combination of coursework and independent thesis research. The program includes core courses such as ED 817, which introduces key concepts and issues in Indigenous education, along with EC&I 823, which focuses on curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on culturally responsive and inclusive practices. Students also complete EFDN 804 and EFDN 805, which typically explore foundational and advanced perspectives in education, research, and Indigenous knowledge systems. In addition, students take an 8xx-level elective, allowing them to deepen their understanding in a specialized area of interest related to Indigenous education or educational research. A major component of the program is ED 901, which carries 15 credit hours and involves conducting original, supervised research that culminates in a written thesis. This thesis allows students to critically investigate a focused topic and contribute new knowledge to the field of Indigenous education. Overall, the program emphasizes academic research, critical thinking, and culturally grounded approaches to education, preparing graduates for doctoral studies or professional roles in education, research, policy development, and Indigenous community engagement.
