COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Arts (research and exhibition) is a 42-credit hour graduate program designed to support advanced artistic practice combined with critical research and professional development. The program begins with core courses MAP 800 and MAP 803, which provide a foundation in research methodologies, critical theory, and interdisciplinary approaches to art and cultural studies. Students then complete 12 credit hours of elective ART 8xx courses, allowing them to explore specialized techniques and concepts across disciplines such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, or media arts, while developing their individual artistic direction. In addition, students undertake 12 credit hours in ART 801–804, which focus on intensive studio practice, critique, and the development of a cohesive body of work. The program also includes a 3-credit component that supports academic and professional growth within the arts. A significant portion of the degree is dedicated to VART 901, which accounts for 9 credit hours and involves the creation of a major research-based exhibition accompanied by written documentation. This final exhibition demonstrates the student’s artistic innovation, technical mastery, and ability to engage with contemporary critical discourse. Overall, the program prepares graduates for professional artistic careers, exhibitions, and teaching roles in post-secondary institutions.
