COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Policy (MPP) in Public Policy (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in policy analysis, research, and evaluation. The program prepares students to address complex policy challenges through evidence-based decision-making and applied research. Students begin with foundational methodological training, including JSGS 803 and JSGS 851, or another approved research methods course, which equips them with essential quantitative and qualitative tools for policy analysis. They also select one course from either JSGS 865 or JSGS 869, focusing on advanced policy areas and specialized approaches to public policy issues. In addition, students complete two elective courses offered by the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS), which may be taken at either campus, allowing flexibility to tailor their studies to specific interests. The program includes JSGS 901, the thesis component, which involves conducting independent, original research under faculty supervision and represents a significant portion of the degree requirements. Students must also complete JSGS 990AB, which may involve seminar participation or additional academic engagement. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in public sector organizations, non-governmental organizations, and private industry, equipping them with the analytical, research, and leadership skills needed to influence and develop effective public policies.
