COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (MEd) in Teaching, Learning and Leadership (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge, research skills, and leadership capacity in educational contexts. The program begins with an approved research methods course, which provides students with essential tools in qualitative and quantitative research, preparing them for scholarly inquiry. Students also complete either EC&I 804 or EDL 819, focusing on curriculum, instruction, or educational leadership, depending on their area of interest. A distinctive component of the program is a required course from the anti-oppressive education or Indigenous education suite, which helps students understand equity, inclusion, decolonization, and culturally responsive teaching practices. In addition, students take two 8xx-level elective courses, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as curriculum development, policy, leadership, or pedagogy. The central component of the program is ED 901, which accounts for 15 credit hours and involves conducting independent, original research under faculty supervision. This thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to design a research project, apply appropriate methodologies, and communicate findings effectively. Overall, the program prepares graduates for leadership roles in education, research positions, and further doctoral studies, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, equity, and evidence-based practice.
