COURSE CURRICULUM

Petroleum Systems Engineering (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour advanced research program designed to develop high-level expertise in petroleum engineering, energy systems, and subsurface engineering research. The program combines advanced coursework with extensive independent research leading to a doctoral thesis. Students begin with core ENER 8xx courses, which provide advanced knowledge in petroleum systems engineering topics such as reservoir engineering, enhanced oil recovery, fluid flow in porous media, and subsurface energy systems. Additional ENxx 8xx courses or ENER 3xx–4xx level courses from related disciplines allow students to broaden their technical understanding and strengthen interdisciplinary research skills. Students also take ENxx 8xx or related discipline electives, enabling specialization in areas aligned with their doctoral research interests. The program includes ENGG 900, which focuses on research methods, professional development, and advanced engineering practice, helping students prepare for doctoral-level research work. The central component is ENER 901, which accounts for 15 credit hours and involves conducting original, independent research under faculty supervision. This research culminates in a doctoral thesis that contributes new knowledge to petroleum systems engineering and related energy fields. Overall, the PhD program prepares graduates for careers in academia, research institutions, and industry leadership roles focused on energy innovation and sustainable resource development.
