COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced theoretical understanding and strong research skills in the study of society, social structures, and human behavior. The program begins with core courses SOC 802 and SOC 804, which provide foundational training in sociological theory and research methods, helping students build a strong academic base for advanced analysis of social issues. Students then complete two SOC 8XX or approved graduate-level courses from sociology or related social science disciplines, allowing them to specialize in areas such as inequality, social justice, institutions, or community studies. The program also includes SOC/SOST 800, a graduate seminar that fosters critical discussion, engagement with current sociological research, and development of academic writing and presentation skills. A central requirement of the degree is SOC 901, which accounts for 18 credit hours and involves conducting independent, original research under faculty supervision. This thesis component is the major academic output of the program and demonstrates the student’s ability to design a research project, apply appropriate sociological methods, and contribute new knowledge to the field. Overall, the MA in Sociology prepares graduates for doctoral studies or careers in research, policy, education, and social analysis roles.
