COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Social Studies (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in the social sciences with a strong emphasis on research and critical analysis. The program allows students to explore complex social, cultural, political, and economic issues through an integrated academic approach. Students begin by completing 12 credit hours of approved 8XX-level courses drawn from social science disciplines, enabling them to build specialized knowledge in areas such as sociology, political science, anthropology, or related fields. In addition, students take SOC/SOST 800, a graduate seminar that focuses on critical engagement with contemporary social science research, theoretical frameworks, and scholarly discussion. This seminar also helps students develop advanced academic writing and presentation skills. A key component of the program is SOC 901, which accounts for 18 credit hours and involves conducting independent, original research under faculty supervision. This thesis requirement is the central academic element of the degree and demonstrates the student’s ability to design and execute a research project using appropriate social science methodologies. Overall, the MA in Social Studies prepares graduates for doctoral studies or professional careers in research, policy analysis, education, and community development, while strengthening their ability to critically understand and address complex societal issues.
