COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Social Studies (course-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in social sciences with a strong focus on theory, methods, and applied knowledge. The program emphasizes the development of critical thinking, analytical skills, and a broad understanding of social, cultural, political, and economic systems. Students begin with SOST 801, which introduces key concepts in social studies and helps build a foundation for advanced graduate-level learning. They also complete one 8XX-level social science theory course from an approved list, which deepens their understanding of major theoretical frameworks used to analyze social phenomena. In addition, students take one 8XX-level social science methods course, which provides essential training in qualitative or quantitative research methods used in social science inquiry. A central component of the program is SOC/SOST 800, a graduate seminar that fosters discussion, critical analysis of contemporary research, and development of academic writing and presentation skills. Students also complete 21 additional credit hours through 7–8XX-level social science or approved elective courses, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as sociology, political science, anthropology, or related fields. Overall, the program prepares graduates for professional roles in research, policy, education, and community-based work.
