COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Religious Studies is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to provide advanced academic training in the study of religion through historical, cultural, and theoretical perspectives. The program combines structured coursework with independent research culminating in a thesis. Students begin with RLST 810, which provides foundational training in research methods and critical approaches to the study of religion. They also complete two courses selected from RLST 800, RLST 801, or RLST 802, which explore key themes, texts, and traditions within religious studies from different methodological and disciplinary perspectives. In addition, students take RLST 8xx-level courses or approved cognate courses from related disciplines, allowing them to broaden their academic understanding and tailor their studies to specific research interests. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to thesis research, which accounts for 15 credit hours. This component involves conducting independent, original research under faculty supervision and contributes new scholarly insight to the field of religious studies. The thesis is the central academic requirement of the degree and demonstrates the student’s ability to apply critical thinking, research methods, and theoretical frameworks effectively. Overall, the program prepares graduates for doctoral studies or careers in education, research, cultural organizations, and other fields requiring strong analytical and interpretive skills.
