COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Musicology (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced scholarly expertise in the historical, cultural, and analytical study of music. The program combines structured coursework with independent research leading to a major thesis. Students begin with MAP 800, which introduces foundational concepts in music research and academic writing. They also complete MU 819, a core course focused on advanced musicological methods, critical analysis, and research approaches in the study of music history and culture. In addition, students take two courses selected from MU 803–809, allowing them to explore specialized topics in music theory, history, or analysis. The program further includes one advanced elective chosen from MU 811, MU 816–818, or MU 820, providing deeper engagement in specific areas of musicological inquiry. These courses collectively build a strong theoretical and methodological foundation for conducting independent research. The program culminates in MU 901, the thesis component, which represents the major portion of the degree requirements and involves producing an original scholarly work under faculty supervision. Overall, the MA in Musicology prepares students for doctoral studies or careers in academic research, education, and other music-related professional fields requiring strong analytical and scholarly expertise.
