COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Creative Writing and English (project-based) at the University of Regina is a 30.0 credit hour graduate program that blends advanced creative writing practice with academic study in English literature. The program is designed for students who want to develop strong creative skills while also gaining a solid foundation in literary analysis and critical thinking. It includes multiple ENGL 8xx-level creative writing courses where students produce original work in genres such as poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction under the guidance of experienced faculty. Additional ENGL 8xx courses provide opportunities to study literature, theory, and advanced topics in English studies, strengthening students’ analytical and interpretive abilities. Students also complete elective coursework in English or related disciplines, allowing them to tailor the program to their academic and creative interests. A key component of the degree is the final project, completed through ENGL 902 or ENGL 901, where students produce a substantial creative manuscript or project along with critical reflection. This may include poetry collections, short stories, or creative nonfiction works. The project is designed to demonstrate both creative excellence and academic understanding. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in writing, publishing, editing, and other creative or academic fields by combining structured coursework with independent creative production.
