COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in History at the University of Regina is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to develop advanced historical knowledge, research skills, and analytical thinking through a combination of coursework and thesis research. The program begins with a required core seminar, either HIST 800 or HIST 815, which introduces students to advanced historiographical methods, research approaches, and key debates in historical scholarship. Students then complete three additional HIST 8xx elective courses, allowing them to specialize in particular historical fields such as Canadian history, global history, Indigenous history, or thematic studies. These electives help broaden subject expertise while strengthening critical analysis and research abilities. A further component is HIST 900, a 3-credit requirement typically completed over two semesters, which supports professional development, research preparation, and scholarly engagement. The central and most significant part of the degree is HIST 901, the thesis research component, which accounts for the majority of the program’s credit hours. In this stage, students conduct original, supervised historical research and produce a substantial thesis demonstrating mastery of historical methods and scholarly writing. Overall, the program prepares graduates for doctoral studies or careers in education, research, archives, museums, public history, and other fields requiring advanced historical expertise.
