COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Sustainability is an 18.0 credit hour interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability from social, environmental, and systems-based perspectives. Offered through the University of Regina, the program explores how human societies interact with the natural environment and how sustainable practices can be developed and applied across different sectors. The curriculum begins with “The Sustainability Problem,” introduced through courses such as GES 200, PHIL 282, or SOC 230, which examine the core challenges of sustainability. Students then study “Dimensions of Human Sustainability,” selecting from courses in Indigenous studies, sociology, philosophy, criminal justice, religion, and gender studies to understand social and cultural aspects of sustainability. “Dimensions of Environmental Sustainability” focuses on ecological systems and environmental challenges through courses in biology, earth sciences, psychology, and related fields. Additional coursework in Human Sustainability Options and Environmental Sustainability Options allows students to explore specialized topics such as economics, policy, health, and environmental science. The program culminates with “Sustainability in Practice,” which emphasizes applied learning through interdisciplinary and experiential courses. Overall, the certificate equips students with critical thinking skills and practical knowledge to address sustainability challenges at local, national, and global levels.
