COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing concentration within the English major at the University of Regina is an optional academic pathway designed for students who want to specialize in imaginative and professional writing while completing their English degree. This concentration requires a total of 12 credit hours within the major and focuses on developing advanced creative and editorial skills across multiple literary forms. Students begin with foundational courses such as ENGL 251 and ENGL 252, which introduce key techniques in creative writing, including narrative development, poetic expression, character building, and stylistic experimentation. These courses help students strengthen their ability to write clearly, creatively, and effectively while also learning essential editing and revision skills. After completing the introductory level, students choose two advanced courses from ENGL 352 (topics AA–ZZ), ENGL 353, ENGL 354, or other designated Honours-level creative writing courses. These upper-level courses require students to produce substantial original work in at least two different genres, such as fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction. Through workshops, peer feedback, and instructor guidance, students refine their voice and writing style while developing a professional-quality portfolio. Overall, the concentration prepares students for careers in writing, publishing, editing, media, communications, and other creative industries by combining literary study with intensive creative practice.
