COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Secondary Education (BEd) and the Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD) programs at the University of Regina are designed to prepare students to become qualified secondary school teachers through a structured combination of academic coursework, subject specialization, and extensive classroom practice. Both programs focus on developing strong foundations in educational theory, curriculum studies, psychology of learning, and teaching methods while also emphasizing real classroom experience through progressive field placements in schools. Students select a major and a minor teachable subject area, which ensures they gain depth in content knowledge alongside pedagogical skills. Core education courses typically include studies in classroom management, inclusive education, assessment strategies, Indigenous perspectives in education, and the use of technology in teaching and learning. The BEAD program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree and therefore provides a more accelerated pathway into teacher certification, while the four-year BEd integrates education studies with undergraduate academic development from the beginning. Both pathways include multiple practicum placements each year, culminating in a final extended internship where students take on full teaching responsibilities under supervision. Graduates of both programs meet certification requirements for teaching in Saskatchewan and are prepared to work in diverse, multicultural school environments with a strong focus on reflective practice, equity, and professional ethics.
