COURSE CURRICULUM

The Yukon Native Teacher Education Program (YNTEP) Bachelor of Education Elementary degree at the University of Regina is a 120-credit-hour program designed to prepare future elementary teachers through a culturally grounded and community-focused approach. In the early terms (1–2), students complete foundational courses such as ECS 101 and ECS 102, English (ENGL 100 and 101), mathematics (MATH 101 or 130), Indigenous language studies, First Nations history or studies (HIST 140), and electives in arts and non-education subjects. These courses build academic skills while emphasizing Indigenous knowledge and cultural learning. In the middle years (Terms 3–4), students progress into education-focused studies including ELNG 200, ECCU 200 and 300, ECS 203, EINL 200, and natural science and elective courses, along with introductory field experiences such as ELBP 215 and ELBP 225. The upper years (Terms 5–7) focus on pedagogy and subject-specific teaching methods, including literacy (ERDG 310), mathematics (EMTH 310), science (ESCI 310), health and physical education (EHE 310, EPE 310), social studies (ESST 310), and Indigenous education, along with rural placement (EFLD 311) and cultural camp experience (ECCU 390). The final stage includes advanced coursework such as ERDG 425, EPSY 400, and a full-time internship (EFLD 405). Overall, the program integrates academic learning, Indigenous perspectives, and extensive classroom experience to prepare culturally responsive and skilled elementary educators.
