COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at the University of Regina is a structured professional degree designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical field experience in human services. The curriculum is divided into two main components: General University Studies (GUS) and Social Work Studies, totaling about 120 credit hours. The GUS section includes foundational courses such as English (ENGL 100/110), Indigenous Studies (INDG 100 and higher-level INDG courses), Psychology, Sociology, Women’s and Gender Studies, and other humanities, science, and social science electives to build a broad academic base. The Social Work Studies section includes core professional courses such as SW 100, SW 202, SW 345, SW 346, SW 347, SW 350, SW 390, SW 405, SW 451, SW 460, and SW 469, along with social work electives and two major practicum placements that provide around 700 hours of supervised field experience in real community and agency settings. These practica are typically completed in the later years of the program and are essential for developing hands-on professional skills. The curriculum emphasizes social justice, Indigenous and decolonizing perspectives, human rights, and community empowerment. Overall, the program prepares students for careers in child welfare, mental health, healthcare, criminal justice, community development, and policy work while meeting Canadian accreditation standards for professional social work practice.
