COURSE CURRICULUM

The Joint Bachelor of Music Education (BMusEd) and Bachelor of Music (BMus) program is a 150-credit-hour integrated degree designed to prepare students as both professional musicians and qualified secondary school music educators. The program is structured over multiple terms, combining music performance, theory, history, pedagogy, and education courses. In the first year, students take foundational courses such as ECS 101 and ECS 102, MAP 001, ENGL 100, MUHI 202 and 203, MUTH 211, 212, 221, and 222, applied music lessons, and core ensemble participation. As the program progresses, students study advanced music theory, analysis, and performance through courses like MUTH 321, MUTQ courses, MUPE courses, MU 399 recital work, and additional ensemble involvement. Students also complete Indigenous education (INDG 100), curriculum and teaching methods courses, and specialized music education courses such as EMUS 350, 366, and 377. Education-focused courses including ECS 203, 305, 310, 401, EPSY 400, and ECCU 400 develop teaching skills and classroom readiness. A teaching minor is also required across several terms. The program concludes with a major internship (EFLD 400), providing extensive hands-on teaching experience in schools. Graduates earn both degrees and are fully prepared for careers in music education and performance.
