COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Indigenous Education Program at the First Nations University of Canada is designed to prepare future elementary teachers who can work effectively in diverse and culturally rich classroom environments. The program blends the structure of the University of Regina Faculty of Education elementary certification with specialized courses developed through the Indigenous Education Department. It prepares students as generalist teachers, meaning they are trained to teach a wide range of subjects at the elementary level rather than focusing on a single discipline. A strong emphasis is placed on language arts to support literacy development, along with methodology courses covering seven key subject areas. A defining feature of the program is its concentration in Indigenous education, which ensures that teacher candidates develop a deep understanding of Indigenous worldviews, histories, cultures, and pedagogical approaches. Most courses are delivered through the First Nations University of Canada and are intentionally adapted to include First Nations content, traditions, and teaching practices. These courses also focus on the unique learning needs of First Nations students and address important issues such as cultural identity, language revitalization, and community involvement. Overall, the program aims to produce culturally responsive and socially conscious educators who can support both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners in inclusive and respectful educational settings.
