COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Music is an advanced four-year program that combines core music studies with broader academic and interdisciplinary learning. Students must complete Critical Competency Electives worth 9 credit hours, choosing three courses from approved areas to strengthen foundational skills across writing, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The major requirements include 36 credit hours in music, beginning with one foundational course such as MU 100, MU 101, or MUTH 211/221, with prerequisites ensuring competency in music theory. Students also complete six MUEN ensemble courses to gain practical performance experience, followed by four advanced courses selected from music theory, history, composition, performance, or related fields, with at least two at the senior level and two within specified music prefixes. Additionally, students choose five elective courses within the major to develop specialization. The honours component adds 21 credit hours, including three advanced 300- or 400-level courses, an honours paper or equivalent research credit, a MAP 400 seminar or approved senior seminar, and two courses in a relevant language other than English. Outside the major, students complete 12 credit hours in Media, Art, and Performance disciplines, including interdisciplinary study. Finally, 21 credit hours of open electives allow further academic exploration, bringing the total program requirement to 120 credit hours.
