COURSE CURRICULUM

Journalism and news media involve creating and distributing news and commentary through various platforms, including print, digital, and broadcast channels such as newspapers, magazines, websites, podcasts, social media, radio, and television. Communications, on the other hand, emphasizes broader writing and messaging skills, covering areas like public relations, media relations, crisis communication, event promotion, and strategic message positioning. At the University of Regina, students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through a range of specialized courses. JRN 100 introduces the role of journalism in democratic societies, highlighting press freedom, global contexts, and its connection to human rights while critically examining shifts in media power. JRN 200 focuses on digital news writing, teaching students how to research, pitch, write, edit, and publish accurate and timely stories for both print and online platforms, following Canadian Press style. JRN 202 explores investigative journalism, covering its history, social impact, and essential skills such as accessing public information, interviewing difficult sources, fact-checking, and avoiding legal and ethical issues. JRN 482 examines Indigenous representation in the media, addressing issues of fairness, accuracy, and inclusion, while exploring stereotypes, under-reporting, and culturally responsible reporting practices in journalism.
