COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in Statistics at UPEI requires a total of 120 semester hours of credit, encompassing a comprehensive curriculum that blends core mathematics, computer science, and specialized statistics courses. The program begins with a common core of 23 credits, including key foundational courses such as AMS 1910 (Introduction to Data Science), CS 1920 (Computer Science II), and advanced mathematics courses like Multivariable and Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra II, and Mathematical Reasoning. Students gain practical experience through courses like MCS 2030 (R Technology Lab), which focuses on statistical computing. The core statistics courses include STAT 2910 and STAT 3910 (Probability and Mathematical Statistics I and II), STAT 2240 (Applied Regression Analysis), STAT 4550 (Data Analysis and Inference), STAT 3340 (Experimental Design), STAT 3330 (Time Series I), STAT 4110 (Statistical Simulation), and STAT 4410 (Stochastic Processes). Additionally, students must complete two electives in Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the 2000 level or higher, contributing six credits, along with courses like MCS 3050 (Tutoring in Mathematical and Computational Sciences) and MCS 4210 (Professional Communication and Practice). The remaining 46 credits are fulfilled through general electives. This well-rounded program prepares students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to excel in careers involving data analysis, statistical research, and applied mathematics.
