COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in Mathematics at UPEI requires a total of 120 semester hours of credit, combining core courses, electives, and general studies to provide a comprehensive foundation in both pure and applied mathematics. The common core includes 23 credits covering essential subjects such as Computer Science II (CS 1920), Multivariable and Vector Calculus (MATH 2910), Linear Algebra II (MATH 2620), Mathematical Reasoning (MATH 2720), and technology labs like MAPLE or Matlab (MCS 2010 or MCS 2020). Foundational theoretical courses include Combinatorics I (MATH 2420), Real Analysis (MATH 3510), Group Theory (MATH 3610), and a choice between Differential Equations (MATH 3010) or Probability and Mathematical Statistics I (STAT 2910). Students also complete five electives within Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the 2000 level or higher, with at least two at the 3000 level or above, allowing for specialization and deeper study. Additionally, the program includes professional development components such as Tutoring in Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS 3050) and Professional Communication and Practice (MCS 4210). To meet the total credit requirement, students take 52 additional general electives. This structure equips graduates with strong analytical, computational, and communication skills, preparing them for careers or advanced studies in mathematics and related fields.
