COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology program at UPEI begins with a first year focused on foundational sciences, including General Chemistry I and II, Calculus, Physics for the Life Sciences, Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology, Introduction to Organisms, Indigenous Teachings (IKE 1040), and general electives alongside a choice of UPEI writing or inquiry courses. In the second year, students take courses such as Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Introductory Statistics, and additional general electives. After completing these courses, students are eligible to transfer to Holland College, where they enter the third year of the BSc Biotechnology program. The transfer begins with an intersession program at Holland College in May and June, followed by the second year of the Bioscience Technology program starting in September. This year includes practical on-the-job training during the following intersession period. Upon successful completion, students receive a block credit transfer of 30 credit hours and return to UPEI for the final year. The fourth year includes courses such as Analytical Instrumentation, Introduction to Bioinformatics or Computational Biology, Introduction to Physiology of Cells and Organisms, Molecular Biotechnology, and science electives at the 3000 and 4000 levels, along with general electives, completing a comprehensive and hands-on biotechnology education.
