COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology program at UPEI follows a structured four-year course sequence designed to build foundational knowledge and specialization skills. In the first year, students complete introductory courses in Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, Indigenous Teachings, and select electives based on their chosen specialization—General Biology, Environmental, or Life Sciences. The second year focuses on Organic Chemistry, Statistics, and specialization-specific courses such as Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics, and other electives to reach 30 semester hours.In the third year, students deepen their expertise with courses like Physiology of Cells and Organisms, Evolutionary Biology, Biochemistry, and specialization electives at the 2000-level. General Biology students select five biology electives, while Environmental and Life Sciences specializations include specialized electives tailored to their fields, including environmental chemistry or molecular biology research techniques.The fourth year emphasizes advanced study with two 4000-level biology electives from specialization lists and additional electives to complete 30 semester hours. This sequence ensures students gain both broad biological knowledge and focused expertise, preparing them for careers or further study in health professions, environmental science, biotechnology, or related fields.
