COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in Actuarial Science at UPEI requires a total of 120 semester hours of credit, encompassing a broad range of courses designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, and finance. The common core includes essential courses such as Computer Science II, Multivariable and Vector Calculus, Probability and Mathematical Statistics I and II, Applied Regression Analysis, and Differential Equations, totaling 23 credits. Students must also complete at least one lab course, choosing from Visual Basic in Excel Technology Lab, Introduction to GGY Axis Lab, or R Technology Lab. The actuarial science-specific courses cover Financial Mathematics, Long Term Actuarial Mathematics I and II, Introduction to Financial Derivatives, Advanced Corporate Finance, and Statistics for Risk Modelling. Specialized courses such as Loss Models I and II, Short-term Insurance Pricing and Reserving, and Credibility Theory prepare students for advanced actuarial concepts. Additional courses in Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Introduction to Accounting, and Corporate Finance provide a well-rounded business background. Students also complete a Professional Communication and Practice course, emphasizing essential communication skills in the field. Furthermore, students must take 24 credits of general electives to fulfill degree requirements, allowing flexibility to explore other interests. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for success in the actuarial profession.
