COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music Education program spans five years and integrates comprehensive music and education coursework to prepare students for teaching music in elementary and secondary schools. In Years 1 and 2, students complete foundational courses in music theory, aural skills, music culture, applied music (woodwind, brass, percussion, voice, piano, strings, or organ), and non-music electives, along with mandatory participation in ensembles such as Concert Choir and Wind Symphony. Year 3 focuses on advanced applied music, elementary music education methods, music education electives, and non-music electives. Year 4 emphasizes applied music, secondary music education methods, a teaching internship, music education electives, and non-music electives. Students also select from specialized education courses in English or French, tailored to their intended teaching level—elementary (K-6) or secondary (7-12)—covering topics like curriculum planning, inclusive classrooms, assessment, and subject-specific methods. In Year 5, students take conducting, a second teaching internship, music education electives, music electives, and non-music electives. Education methods courses are taken in pairs, with options varying by specialization and language of instruction, ensuring students develop expertise in a second teaching area. Ensemble participation is a continuous requirement, critical to graduation. This integrated curriculum balances music mastery with pedagogical skills, preparing graduates for effective, specialized music education careers.
