COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music major at UPEI is a structured four-year program totaling 120 semester hours, with a strong focus on both applied music and academic study. In the first year, students take foundational courses including Music Theory (1130-1140), Aural Skills (1150, 1170), Music and Culture (1230-1240), and six hours of applied lessons in their chosen instrument or voice, along with six hours of non-music electives, totaling 30 credit hours. Ensemble participation is mandatory, requiring students to complete six full-year ensembles throughout the degree, tailored to their major instrument or voice. In the second year, students continue with advanced theory (2130-2140), aural skills (2150, 2170), Music and Culture II (2230), applied lessons (2211-2212 or equivalent), one music elective, and six hours of non-music electives. The third and fourth years focus heavily on applied music courses (3211-3212, 3311-3312, 4211-4212, etc.), music electives, and non-music electives, maintaining a total of 30 credit hours each year. Ensemble participation remains a continuous requirement. This program balances performance training with broad academic study to prepare students for diverse careers in music or further graduate studies. Completion of all ensemble requirements is essential for graduation.
