COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) program at UPEI requires students to complete 120 credit hours (40 courses), including a minimum of 42 credit hours (14 courses) designated as Environmental Studies (ENV). Of these ENV courses, at least six must be at the 3000 level or above, with a minimum of two at the 4000 level. Five core ENV courses, totaling 15 credits, are mandatory: ENV 1010 (Introduction to Environmental Studies), ENV 2030 (Societies and Sustainability), ENV 2040 (Methods of Environmental Inquiry), ENV 3010 (Environmental Studies Internship), and ENV 4010 (Public Scholars on Environmental Issues). Students must also take nine additional ENV courses (27 credits), which can be part of a specialization or electives. Beyond ENV courses, BES majors must complete foundational courses from other departments: one general UPEI course (3 credits), three foundational cognate courses including Environmental Biology, Environmental Philosophy, and Sociology or Anthropology (9 credits), one statistics course (3 credits), and four foundational courses from Science and Business (12 credits), and four from Arts, including Political Science or Economics (12 credits). The remaining credits to reach 120 come from electives chosen by the student. Additionally, all graduates must complete at least one writing-intensive course, with recommended options being English 3810 (Professional Writing) or Business 2110 (Business Communications).
