COURSE CURRICULUM

Spanish at UPEI, students must demonstrate a strong interest and competency in the language and plan to complete a minimum of 42 semester hours in Spanish. Admission to the major requires approval from a Departmental Committee and the Dean of Arts, who will review all courses completed or planned, whether at UPEI or other Canadian or international institutions. Participation in the department’s exchange programs is highly encouraged, as these provide valuable cultural and linguistic immersion experiences that enhance learning. Alongside the Spanish coursework, students are required to complete at least 12 semester hours in one or more modern languages other than Spanish, broadening their linguistic skills and cultural knowledge. To ensure students meet all academic requirements and make informed choices, it is recommended they consult early with the Chair of Modern Languages regarding their course selections or alternative options. This careful planning and diverse coursework prepare students for advanced proficiency in Spanish and open opportunities for careers in international fields such as translation, diplomacy, education, and business. The program’s combination of language study, cultural exposure, and elective courses equips graduates with the skills needed to succeed in a globalized world.
