COURSE CURRICULUM

The Religious Studies major requires the completion of 42 semester hours, with specific course requirements to ensure a well-rounded understanding of religion. Students must take either RS 1050 (World Religions) or both RS 1010 (Religions of the World: Western Traditions) and RS 1020 (Religions of the World: Eastern Traditions) to gain a foundational overview. They are also required to take at least one course from Group B (Thematic Introductions), which includes topics like myths of love or evil, and one from Group F (Advanced Seminar), which focuses on theory and method in religious studies. Additionally, students must complete at least two courses from each of Groups C, D, and E, with one of the Group C courses at the 3000 level. Group C covers Western Religious History, with courses on Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and key theological developments. Group D focuses on Eastern Religions and Comparative Religion, offering courses on Buddhism, Hinduism, Japanese religion, and interreligious dialogue. Group E explores Religion and Modernity, including topics like the meaning of life, religion and politics, psychology of religion, and science and religion. Remaining credits can be chosen from any Religious Studies offerings, including cross-listed courses in related fields like Classics, Fine Arts, Political Science, Philosophy, and Sociology. This structure encourages a broad yet in-depth exploration of religious traditions and contemporary issues.
