COURSE CURRICULUM

To obtain a major in Political Science at UPEI, students must complete a minimum of 42 semester hours (14 courses) in the discipline, including four core courses: Political Science 2530 (Introduction to Political Theory), 2620 (Canadian Politics), 2820 (International Politics), and either 4220 (Comparative Ethnic Nationalism) or 4510 (Comparative Politics). These core courses cover the fundamental fields of political theory, Canadian politics, international politics, and comparative politics, providing students with a comprehensive foundation in the discipline.In addition to the core courses, students must complete one additional course from each of the three fields—Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Politics—along with seven other electives in Political Science. Majors are expected to complete Political Science 2530 by the end of their second year, and no later than the end of their third year. The program requires at least six courses at the 3000 or 4000 level, ensuring advanced study in the field.The core-course requirement ensures all graduates have a solid grounding in essential political science areas and develop strong analytical skills. This foundation prepares students for success in higher-level courses and future careers, enabling them to analyze complex political issues and engage critically with political theories and systems.
