COURSE CURRICULUM

Philosophy at UPEI, students must earn at least 120 semester hours of academic credit, equivalent to 40 courses. Of these, a minimum of 42 semester hours (14 courses) must be in Philosophy. Students are required to take several core courses, including PHIL 2510 (Formal Logic), PHIL 3030 (Ethical Theory), PHIL 2220 (Political Philosophy), PHIL 3020 (Environmental Philosophy), PHIL 2620 (Plato and Aristotle), and either PHIL 3540 (Philosophy of Mind) or PHIL 3850 (The Philosophy of Kant). Additionally, students must complete six more Philosophy courses, selecting one from each of six designated areas (A to F) to ensure a broad understanding of philosophical disciplines. At least six of these Philosophy courses (18 semester hours) must be at the senior level (3000 or 4000 level) to develop advanced knowledge and critical thinking skills. Beyond these requirements, students must also complete two additional Philosophy courses to further deepen their expertise. This program structure ensures a well-rounded philosophical education, preparing students for graduate studies or diverse career paths requiring analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, and strong communication skills. The Major in Philosophy offers a comprehensive foundation in key philosophical topics and methodologies, equipping students to engage thoughtfully with complex ideas and real-world issues.
