COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music at UPEI follows a structured four-year curriculum totaling 120 semester hours. In the first year, students complete foundational courses including Music Theory (1130-1140), Aural Skills (1150, 1170), and Music and Culture (1230-1240), along with non-music and free electives. A key requirement is participation in at least one ensemble each semester, totaling a minimum of four full-year ensembles throughout the degree, with two being large ensembles; failure to meet this results in denied graduation. In the second year, students advance their theory and aural skills courses (2130-2140 and 2150, 2170), continue with Music and Culture 2230, take music electives, and complete additional non-music and free electives, while maintaining ensemble participation. The third year emphasizes music electives (12 credits), alongside non-music and free electives (9 credits each), with ongoing ensemble involvement. Students may include up to six semester hours of Music Education courses as part of their electives. The fourth and final year mirrors the third, with 12 credits in music electives and 18 credits in non-music and free electives. Studio Minor students need departmental permission to enroll in Music 1050. This curriculum offers a balanced combination of theoretical, cultural, and practical music education within a broader arts framework.
