COURSE CURRICULUM

German if they demonstrate strong interest and competency in the language, subject to approval by the Departmental Committee and the Dean of Arts. The major requires the completion of a minimum of 42 semester hours in German. These courses can be taken at UPEI or, with prior approval, at other Canadian or international institutions. The program is designed to offer flexibility while maintaining academic rigor, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their linguistic background and academic goals. Beginners start with foundational courses such as German 1010, while students with prior experience may enter higher-level courses like 1020, 2010, or 2020. Lower-level courses emphasize language acquisition, while upper-level offerings focus more on cultural, historical, and literary aspects of German-speaking regions. Since German is not currently taught in high schools on Prince Edward Island, UPEI serves as the province’s only access point for formal German language education. The program prepares students for further academic study, travel, or careers involving German-speaking countries. Those interested in majoring are encouraged to consult with the Department early to develop an approved course plan that meets all requirements and aligns with their academic and professional aspirations.
