COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in French at UPEI requires a minimum of 42 semester hours in French, including two core courses: French 2410 and French 2420. Students must complete at least 24 semester hours from upper-level courses beyond French 2420 to ensure depth of study in the language and Francophone cultures. For students transferring credits from other institutions, at least 6 upper-level semester hours must be completed at UPEI to meet residency requirements. In addition to the French course requirements, students must complete at least 12 semester hours in one or more modern languages other than French, promoting multilingual competence and broadening linguistic understanding. As part of the university-wide academic foundation, students must take one of UPEI 1010, 1020, or 1030, and at least one writing-intensive course. To complement their French studies, students are encouraged to include courses in History and Philosophy, which provide valuable context for understanding the cultural, historical, and philosophical dimensions of the Francophone world. It is recommended that students consult with the Chair of Modern Languages early in their program to plan their course selections effectively and to explore alternative elective options that align with their academic and career goals.
