COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Majors and Honours program encourages students to explore English literature from various perspectives, including historical, theoretical, interdisciplinary, and genre studies. The program also offers courses in creative writing and linguistics, providing a well-rounded education that covers both the history of the English language and literature and contemporary literary developments. The curriculum is designed to develop students’ literary skills progressively over four years, moving from introductory courses to advanced mastery. Key skills developed include understanding elements of the English language, writing research essays, critical reading and literary theory, mastering disciplinary terminology, knowledge of literary history, and verbal presentations. Courses are structured into four levels: 1000-level (Introduction), 2000-level (Foundation), 3000-level (Coverage), and 4000-level (Focus). To major in English, students must complete 51 credits, including required courses such as English 1210, 1220, 2040, and 2960 (totaling 12 credits), four pre-1900 English courses (12 credits), one course in English Language and Linguistics or Literary Theory (3 credits), two 4000-level courses (6 credits), and six English electives (18 credits). It is strongly recommended that students take English/UPEI 1010 in their first year, as it fulfills a general university requirement and helps build a foundation for their major studies.
