COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diversity and Social Justice Studies (DSJS) program at UPEI offers an interdisciplinary curriculum rooted in critical analysis of identity, power, and social structures. Core requirements include one introductory course—either DSJS 1120 (Identities and Place), DSJS 1130 (Bodies and Power), or DSJS 1140 (Love and Labour)—and one advanced course—DSJS 4040 (Theorizing Social Justice) or DSJS 4070 (Social Change, Social Justice). Beyond core courses, students choose from a wide range of DSJS and cross-listed courses organized into three thematic clusters: Gender and Sexuality, Identities and Social Structures, and Cultural Representation and Analysis.Courses in the Gender and Sexuality cluster examine topics such as queer theory, masculinity, women’s history, and psychological and cultural perspectives on gender. The Identities and Social Structures cluster explores race, disability, social inequality, youth cultures, and globalization. Cultural Representation and Analysis includes courses on food and culture, monsters and cyborgs, visual culture, post-colonial theory, and the impact of science on society.This diverse offering allows students to tailor their studies to areas of interest while gaining a deeper understanding of how power and identity shape lived experiences. The program prepares students for careers in advocacy, education, social policy, and beyond.
