COURSE CURRICULUM

Bachelor of Applied Arts in Journalism program at UPEI complete 20 courses totaling 60 semester hours, designed to provide a broad foundation essential for journalistic practice. Among these courses, students must complete at least six advanced-level courses (3000/4000 level), accounting for 18 semester hours, ensuring depth and specialization in their studies. The required courses include ENG 1010 (UPEI 1010), JOUR 1010, ENG 3810, one course from any Math or PSY 2510 or 2710, WRIT 4040, and at least one course in Communication Studies (CST) or Digital Storytelling and Journalism Studies (DSJS). Beyond these core requirements, students select a specialization area to focus their studies, choosing from seven options: General Journalism, Law and Politics, International Affairs, Business and Economics, Environment and Health, Science and Technology, or Arts and Entertainment. This structure allows students to tailor their education to their interests and career goals while maintaining a comprehensive journalism curriculum. The program’s combination of foundational courses, advanced studies, and specialized focus equips students with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking necessary to succeed in diverse journalism fields. The breadth and depth of coursework prepare graduates to effectively report, analyze, and communicate on a wide range of topics in today’s media landscape.
