COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of Ottawa offers a broad selection of 3-unit graduate-level Earth Sciences courses, each equivalent to 0.5 units at Carleton University, under the collaborative Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre (OCGC). These courses span key disciplines within geoscience, integrating advanced theoretical knowledge with practical and field applications. Topics include mineralogy (GEO 5114), thermodynamics and metamorphic petrology (GEO 5115), igneous and ore deposit petrology (GEO 5122, GEO 5124), and natural hazards (GEO 5125). Sedimentology is explored through siliciclastic (GEO 5131) and carbonate systems (GEO 5135), while evolutionary and micropaleontology topics are covered in GEO 5136–GEO 5138. Geochemistry courses include environmental isotopes (GEO 5143), isotope mapping (GEO 5144), and radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry (GEO 5163, GEO 5169), alongside radioisotope methods (GEO 5145) and aqueous modeling (GEO 5147, GEO 5149). Precambrian geology (GEO 5151), climate change (GEO 5155), and computer applications (GEO 5153) further broaden students’ understanding. Structural geology and tectonics (GEO 5173, GEO 5174), along with geophysics-oriented courses such as seismology (GEO 5177), signal processing (GEO 5178), and Earth physics (GEO 5171), emphasize interdisciplinary techniques. Field-based and independent research opportunities are available in GEO 5191 and GEO 5193, while GEO 5301 provides seminar-based exposure to current research and scientific communication. Economic geology is deepened through GEO 5306, focusing on hydrothermal ore systems. These courses equip students with theoretical, computational, and practical skills for careers or research in geoscience, with many including hands-on components, such as labs or fieldwork. All courses have Carleton equivalents, reflecting the shared academic structure of the OCGC.
