COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE) offers graduate programs that include Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering. The MASc is a research-intensive program requiring 2.5 credits of coursework, a 2.5-credit thesis, and participation in a seminar. The MEng program is offered in both coursework-based and project-based formats. The coursework option requires 5.0 credits in graduate courses, while the project option requires 4.5 credits of coursework and a 0.5-credit project. The PhD program is research-focused and designed for those pursuing advanced knowledge and original contributions in civil engineering. Courses are delivered jointly by Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, with students able to access resources, faculty, and courses from both institutions. However, students must register at the home university of their thesis supervisor. Course offerings cover a wide range of civil engineering disciplines such as structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, fire safety, and water resources engineering. Examples of structural courses include finite element analysis, advanced concrete and steel structures, and earthquake engineering. Geotechnical topics include soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geomechanics. Transportation courses cover traffic engineering, urban transportation, road safety, and airport planning. Environmental and water resources courses explore sustainable materials, water resource systems, and seepage through soils. Fire safety engineering includes topics such as fire dynamics, fire modeling, and design for fire resistance. Construction and infrastructure management courses include project management, computer-aided design, and bridge design. Most courses are equivalent to 0.5 credits at Carleton and 3 units at the University of Ottawa. While instruction is primarily in English, some courses may be available in French at the University of Ottawa. Courses are offered on a rotational basis, and students are encouraged to consult current term schedules at both universities for availability and prerequisites.
