COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biomedical Engineering (OCIBME) offers a comprehensive selection of graduate-level courses that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the field. All courses, with the exception of seminars and the thesis, are valued at 3 units at the University of Ottawa and 0.5 units at Carleton University. The program includes core subjects such as biomedical instrumentation, biomechanics, biomaterials, medical imaging, medical informatics, and telemedicine. Courses like Biomedical Instrumentation, Medical Imaging Modalities, Biomechanics of Movement, Biofluid Mechanics, and Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering provide a strong foundation in key areas. Advanced and specialized topics are also available, including Biorobotics, Electromagnetic Fields and Biological Systems, and Design of Orthopaedic Implants and Prostheses. Applied learning is emphasized through project-based and experiential courses such as Clinical Engineering Internship, which involves an off-campus placement and a formal report. Some courses require departmental approval or specific prerequisites. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, including simulations, design work, and lab components. Several courses are cross-listed with engineering departments and cannot be repeated under different course codes. The program is designed to support flexible academic pathways, encouraging students to explore various areas of specialization while drawing from the expertise of faculty across multiple departments at both universities.
