COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology program at the University of Ottawa requires the completion of 120 course units combining foundational knowledge, advanced topics, and laboratory experience. Basic skills include 3 optional units in English at the 1000 or 2000 level. At the 1000 level, compulsory courses cover a broad scientific base including Introduction to Organismal Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Principles of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I, Earth Systems, Calculus for the Life Sciences I and II, and Principles of Physics I. At the 2000 level, students take core courses such as Introduction to Biochemistry, Ecology, Genetics, Animal Form and Function, Plant Science, Organic Chemistry II, and Biostatistics, further developing their understanding of biological processes. A compulsory 4000-level seminar on evaluating and developing science ensures students gain critical thinking and communication skills. Additionally, students must select 9 optional units in biology, biopharmaceutical science, environmental science, and related disciplines, plus 27 optional units at the 3000 or 4000 levels to deepen their specialization. Electives totaling 33 units from faculties like Arts, Education, Law, Social Sciences, or Management allow for interdisciplinary study. A critical requirement is completing at least 12 units at the 3000 or 4000 level with a laboratory component, emphasizing hands-on learning essential for scientific proficiency. Laboratory courses include Modern Bioanalytical Chemistry, Field Biology, General Microbiology Laboratory, Animal Physiology Experiments, Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratories, and Honours Research projects. These labs provide practical experience in various biological techniques and research, preparing students for careers or graduate studies in biology, biomedicine, ecology, and related fields.
