COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Ottawa is a comprehensive 120-unit program that offers a strong foundation in the chemical and molecular processes of life. The curriculum begins with foundational science courses at the 1000 level, including biology (BIO 1130, BIO 1140), chemistry (CHM 1311, CHM 1321), mathematics (MAT 1330, MAT 1332), and physics (PHY 1321), along with an English course to build communication skills. At the 2000 level, students dive deeper into key areas of biochemistry and related fields through courses such as BCH 2333 (Introduction to Biochemistry), BIO 2133 (Genetics), and various chemistry courses, including organic, analytical, and physical chemistry. The 3000-level courses build on this foundation with advanced topics like intermediary metabolism, protein structure and function, molecular biology, and laboratory-based training. At the 4000 level, students complete courses in analytical and structural biochemistry and a biochemistry seminar. They also choose between completing an Honours Research Project (BCH 4040) or a combination of advanced biosciences labs and additional upper-level science courses. Optional courses allow students to tailor their education toward specific interests such as genomics, synthetic biology, pathological biochemistry, or enzyme chemistry. Students also complete 27 units of electives, 9 of which must be from faculties such as Arts, Law, Social Sciences, Education, or Management, providing interdisciplinary breadth. This well-rounded structure ensures students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, healthcare, or graduate and professional programs such as medicine or pharmacy. The program also offers flexibility through courses available in English or French and opportunities to engage in research under expert supervision, supporting student development in both academic and applied science environments.
