COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences program includes a comprehensive course structure designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the biological, social, and environmental aspects of health. At the 1000 level, students complete compulsory courses such as Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology, Principles of Chemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, Determinants of Health, Introduction to Psychology, Principles of Sociology, and a Workshop in Essay Writing. These courses lay the groundwork for understanding the biological sciences alongside communication and social science fundamentals. Moving to the 2000 level, students study Communication and Health, Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, Sociopolitical and Economic Perspectives in Health, Quantitative Methods in Health Sciences focused on both continuous and categorical variables, and Bioethics. These courses build on foundational knowledge by integrating health communication, disease mechanisms, research skills, and ethical considerations in health contexts. At the 3000 level, students engage with more advanced topics including Health Research Methods covering quantitative and qualitative approaches, Experience of Illness, Pharmacology, Epidemiology, Environment and Health, and Pathophysiology of Health Problems. These courses deepen understanding of health research, disease processes, and the impact of environmental factors on health. The 4000 level includes courses on the Development and Evaluation of Health Programs and the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, preparing students for practical application and program assessment. Students must also complete 15 optional Health Sciences units and 6 science elective units from the Faculty of Science, allowing specialization and exploration of scientific topics. Additionally, students take 30 elective units or pursue a minor, offering flexibility to tailor their education. Altogether, the program requires 120 units, ensuring a well-rounded education that prepares students for diverse careers or further graduate studies in health-related fields.
