COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program consists of 120 course units completed over four years, offering a balanced curriculum that integrates studio practice with academic learning in the arts. The program begins with 12 units of foundational courses that focus on basic skills in writing, critical thinking, literature, and interdisciplinary arts. Students then progress through a series of compulsory visual arts courses across different levels. At the 1000 level, they take introductory courses in painting, sculpture, analog photography, media arts, and two foundational art history courses covering early artistic traditions. At the 2000 level, students delve into 19th-century art (1789–1900) and early modern art (1900–1945), followed by upper-level courses at the 3000 level exploring the developments in art after modernism (1945–1978) and postmodernism (1978–2000). The 4000-level courses focus on preparing students for professional artistic careers through intensive studio practice, professional practices in art, and the process of moving from studio work to public exhibition. In addition to compulsory courses, students complete 18 units of optional studio courses in visual arts, 6 of which must be at the 3000 level, and 6 units of optional art history courses. To support a well-rounded education, the program includes 36 elective units, allowing students to explore other academic interests or deepen their focus in a specific area. The structured progression from foundational learning to advanced studio and theoretical work ensures that students develop both technical skills and critical insights needed for careers as visual artists or roles within the cultural sector. The inclusion of media arts and interdisciplinary approaches reflects a contemporary vision of artistic practice while maintaining a strong grounding in traditional techniques and art history. This comprehensive curriculum supports both creative development and intellectual growth throughout the four years of study.
