COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is a 120-unit undergraduate program that offers students a flexible and comprehensive academic experience. The program begins with a foundational component focused on developing essential academic skills. Students take ENG 1100, Workshop in Essay Writing, which is worth 3 units and designed to strengthen writing and analytical abilities. In addition, they complete 3-unit courses in philosophy or literature to build critical thinking and communication skills. These include choices such as PHI 1101 (Reasoning and Critical Thinking), PHI 1301 (Philosophy: Ideas and Arguments), and ENG 1120 (Selected Topics in Literature and Composition). Courses like AHL 1100 and AHL 1900 (Introduction to Interdisciplinary Study in the Arts) encourage students to engage with multiple disciplines and ways of thinking, while further options in philosophy allow deeper exploration into moral reasoning and the history of ideas. Beyond the core, the majority of the degree—108 units—is composed of elective courses, which may include a combination of options, minors, or majors. Of these, at least 30 units must be taken within the Faculty of Arts, with a minimum of 12 units at the upper-year level (3000 or 4000 level). This structure supports academic exploration and customization, enabling students to tailor their degree to suit personal interests or career objectives.
