COURSE CURRICULUM

The First Nations Studies program at UNBC offers comprehensive courses on Indigenous cultures, languages, health, and governance. Core courses include an introduction to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada and perspectives in First Nations Studies, as well as a variety of culture and language options. Students can choose language courses, such as Dakelh, Haisla, and Nisga'a, or explore Indigenous cultures at different levels. Upper-division courses dive into specialized topics like research methods in First Nations Studies, internships, and various advanced courses that focus on Indigenous issues, health, environmental philosophy, and international perspectives. The program also offers joint major options with Women’s Studies, Anthropology, and other disciplines, allowing students to integrate their studies and broaden their understanding of gender, power, and inequality within First Nations contexts. Students can further deepen their expertise through elective courses in subjects such as ethnobotany, Indigenous geographies, and more. Minors in First Nations Studies or Indigenous Ecological Knowledge are also available, offering a focused study on Aboriginal issues, ecological knowledge, and Indigenous governance systems. Graduates are equipped to engage with First Nations communities and contribute to collaborative efforts, research, and policymaking involving traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous governance.
