COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Engineering program, offered as a joint degree between UNBC and UBC, includes a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both engineering and environmental sciences. In the early years, students complete courses in fundamental sciences and mathematics, including General Chemistry I and II with accompanying labs, Introductory Physics I: Mechanics, Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Statistical Reasoning for Engineers. Alongside these, students take core engineering courses such as Introduction to Computer Systems and Programming, Technical Writing, Engineering Design I and II, Engineering Mechanics: Statics, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics I, and Engineering Chemistry. Additionally, courses like Material and Energy Balances, Engineering Tools I and II, and Surveying provide students with the technical skills required for environmental engineering practices. Environmental science-focused courses, including Weather and Climate, Engineering Biology, and Introduction to Soil Science (or Earth Science), ensure that students gain a solid understanding of the natural systems they will work to protect and manage. As students progress through the program, they continue developing engineering and design skills through courses such as Engineering Communication, Fluid Mechanics, and Environmental Chemistry. In Year 5, the final semester at UNBC involves the completion of a Capstone Design Project (Engineering Design V), along with courses in Environmental Law, Environmental Measurement and Analysis, and a Social Science Elective. These courses provide students with the critical thinking and practical skills required for a career in environmental engineering, preparing them to tackle complex environmental challenges.
